Preliminary Task

Media Preliminary Task: Planning

So for our prelimary task for media our group of three were assigned a contnuity task to shoot a brief one minute movie that incorperated the three individual filiming techniques match on action, shot/revrese shot and the 180 degree rule. Our plot revolved around flming and editing a charecter opening a door, crossing a room and engaging in diagloue with a fellow charecter in the film, all of which can been seen in the video.

We first began planning our video by brainstorming idea's for the different camera shots that we wanted to use and which we thought would be effective for the video. We decided on using close ups, long shots, over the shoulder shots, and medium close up's. After writing our shot list we transferred the information to a storyboard which we gave us a visual representation for the shots that we wanted to use. Once our storyboard was approved we were given a sony HD camera with a tripod. I felt that I wanted to lead the task so I designated my fellow peers Clifford and Matthew roles that involved them acting and I director of photography. Our plot revolved around Matthew walking down a corridor and opening a door, he would then proceed through the door and down anouther corridor, the camera would cut Clifford who at the same time is exiting from a side door where he would then encounter Matthew and the two would then engage in a dialogue. The dialogue was improvised rather than planned and we felt that this would create a rather natural effect to the overall feel of the video.

Media Preliminary Task: Production

For the majority of the production phase we obided by the storyboard that we wanted to do. However at some points we did have to some adversities such as the joystick on the tripod being jammed. We overcame such problems by remaining on only one level on the tripod. During the production both Matthew and Clifford didn't have any lines and so improvised for much of the dialogue which inturn incorporated shot reverse shot. Our filming lasted for up to 80 minutes and we mainly focused on the key shots like match on action, shot reverse shot and the 180 degree rule which was not broken. After completing the video we returned back to the classroom to edit and review our footage.

Media Preliminary Task: Editing

We imported our footage from our camcorder into imovie on the mac book pro. Both Clifford and Matthew played a direct role in editing what we had. We begun by cutting and trimming bits of video that we did not want. This involved constantly having to look over the footage so we could delegate and make a descion amoungst us about what needed to be cut. Once we had come to that conclusion about what was needed to be cut we ended up with a 45 seconds worth of footage. Certain aspects of the film were to slow and some parts just didn't gel together and so we decided to use a transitional edit just before the dialogue ensues so it makes it out to seem that they are friends who haven't seen each other for a long time this is further illustrated when Matthew states "how are you." In the opening seconds of the film we realised in the editing suite that the shot of Matthews hand against the frame of the door was too short. This would be a pivitol shot for the film and so we felt that it was necessary for us to convey the motion by using the slow motion edit to make the shot longer. After finally piecing the together the film into a almost finished article we added a rap score and a opening text and credits. The opening to the track by the artist French Montana contained aspects that we felt would be relevant to the action occuring on screen. The sharp pleonastic electronic sound of the synthesis fell in really well with the different types of shots occuring on screen and synchronised with Matthew opening the door. Lastly we imported white text for the credits on a over the black background.
