An opening sequence plays an
important role in a film as it establishes the mood and visual character of a
film. It also helps introduce the viewer to the plot, characters and themes. An
opening sequence helps to grab a viewers
attention and interest from the start of the film for example a non-linear
opening sequence is when the audience is dropped in the middle of a situation
and then a viewer becomes curious and wants to find out more.
Opening sequence of London to
Brighton
London to Brighton begins with
production credits as this film isn't a big box office it is funded by the British
film council and the national lottery. A tableau is then present ‘London 3:07am’
is over a black plain screen with no sound this gives you information about
what is about to appear.
The scene then starts abruptly with harsh high key
lighting and loud digetic sounds. It starts with a woman bursting through a
public toilet door with a young girl shortly behind her, the high key lighting
helps outline the griminess of the toilet and gives a real effect. The sequence
starts in a non-linear form therefore we are pretty confused as audience and it
lures us in to find out more as we are ‘dropped into the middle’. We are then
given a close up of the woman who looks financially unstable and we can clearly
see she has a swollen black eye which leaves us in a puzzle this is called an ‘enigma’
and helps further establish that this film is non-linear. The enigma is also
further developed as the older woman has come in with a young girl at 3:07 am,
we know this is a young girl from the colour of her clothing ‘pink and brightly
coloured’.The young girl has make-up all over her face and this makes us
question ‘what is a young girl doing at this time of the night on the streets?
Lastly from the make-up we can connote
that she is trying to disguise her age and trying to fool people into believing
she is older than she is.
The kinetic camera work helps add to
the realistic effect and the fact the camera is constantly in the girls faces
with close ups helps to show how claustrophobic the toilet really is.
